Perhentian Islands Overview: A Diver's Paradise in Crystal Waters

The Perhentian Islands are located off the east coast of Malaysia in Terengganu state, approximately 21 nautical miles (about 39 km) from Kuala Besut port. The islands consist of two main islands—Besar (Large) and Kecil (Small)—plus several smaller islets. According to the Tourism Malaysia 2023 data, the Perhentian Islands attract approximately 45,000 to 60,000 international visitors annually, with diving and snorkeling enthusiasts accounting for over 70% of visitors.

The islands are renowned as "Crystal Waters" (glass-like clear sea) due to water visibility consistently maintained at 25 to 30 meters, second only to Sipadan throughout Southeast Asia. Year-round average water temperature ranges from 26°C to 29°C, with the best diving season from March to October. Some beaches close from November to February due to the Northeast monsoon. According to PADI statistics, the Perhentian Islands have over 25 certified dive sites, with depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters, suitable for divers from beginners to Advanced Open Water level.
